First Day of Spring Grazing!
This past Monday was almost like a holiday on the farm – the cows enjoyed their first day of grazing fresh pasture this year! March 9th is the earliest we've ever been able to begin grazing in the Spring. Here's how:
Last fall, Ben planted triticale, annual rye grass, cow peas, vetch, balansa clover, and radishes in the field by our home. The field POPPED within the last few days and it's beautifully green and vibrant! The rest of our pastures are still brown with some light green grass coming up, but because we planted and overwintered this crop, we could start grazing 4-5 weeks earlier than usual.
(The radishes didn't last through the winter, but the goal of the radishes was to aerate the soil, knowing they wouldn't be around for grazing.) The other crops are looking beautiful and the cows love it.
We enjoyed watching the cows run into the pasture, enjoying the taste of fresh grass, and the warmth of the sun.
This is the day every grazing farmer looks forward to all winter.
Enjoy photos from the cows on this very happy day.
