Bringing in the Harvest

Sorghum Harvest - July 2025

This was our biggest harvest yet, at 80 acres of chopped feed. Why does this matter to us? As a grass-based raw milk dairy, we pour hours and research and implementation into feeding our cows the best nutrition possible.

It's a challenging task. There's dry spells, endless rain (and therefore, mud), windy winters, Kentucky 31 fescue, and humid heat that all affects the cows.

Through all of this, we work hard and lean heavily on our nutritionist to give the cows the best forages, low-starch grains, and minerals in ratios that meet their needs throughout the changing four seasons.

Sorghum sudan or forage sorghum looks similar to corn but it's different because it doesn't have a grain head when we chop it. We have shared photos of our cows grazing sorghum - they eat the leaves and the stalk like candy!

Chopping sorghum means we can ferment it and store for winter or a drought. It is cut in the fields, then merged into rows, and chopped into silage wagons.

Next it is augered into the ag bag blower that fills the bags tightly. Being airtight, the feed will not spoil and can be stored for months and even years.
